Comparison of Fires and Burglaries, 2006
In 2006 there were 2,183,746 total burglaries, 66.2% in residential structures, or 1,445,640 residential burglaries in the United States. (Source: Uniform Crime Report Crime in the United States, 2006 U.S. Department of Justice—Federal Bureau of Investigation, Released September 2007, Table 23)
In 2006 fire departments responded to 412,500 home fires in the United States. (Source: CDC, Fire Deaths and Injuries, Facts – NCIPC Page Located on the Web at http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/factsheets/fire.htm)
Thus the probability of having a burglary of your home is approximately three and a half times greater than the probability of having a fire.
Most homeowners have fire and burglary insurance, which compensates for loss of goods after the fact. In addition people take precautions such as having smoke alarms, and locking windows and doors.
If a fire does break out, the prepared home owner will have a fire extinguisher handy to get the fire under control even before the fire department arrives. Given the much greater risk of a burglary, does it not also make sense to have a burglar extinguisher available to control the burglar until the police arrive?
